Low Vision Clinic Appointment

I’ve been to my Low Vision Appointment last week and collected quite a bounty of useful tech.

PICTURE DESCRIPTION Picture of Bayfields bag full of boxes of useful gadgets

I was led into a back room and then we discussed how I ended up in this room. Being assessed for what would suit me. I explained my difficulties so far and what was concerning me most (The Sun).

First up was magnifiers. A pocket one for reading a few words i.e. Clothes sizes, price tags, small print on packaging. This is an easypocket by Eschenbach.

Then there is a small handheld magnifier with light that we discovered I can only use by shutting one eye or there words jumble up. together. This is a Mobilux led by Eschenbach. It also come with a stand that you can use to do close up work like painting my fingernails with polish. I did this at the weekend and it was so much easier and also makes me feel better as they aren’t as ‘splodgy’ and all over the place as they once were.

Then there was a large handheld magnifier. A Ruby HD by Freedom Scientific. which I read a magazine, (Something I haven’t done for years also)and could even screenshot pictures to enlarge.

Once we had decided what would be best we went to the front desk to try out the sunglasses (cocoons) I tested amber and grey shades. The grey ones made the outside seem dull and just what i needed. The amber ones weren’t suitable as everything was still bright.

All this is for free. On permanent loan. You just have to take them back if they aren’t suitable or you don’t need them anymore. If you need them repaired, they will do that free of charge too.

This was a referral from my local sight aid charity.

I will post blogs for each item and take photos.

Hi all.

Got my appointment with the low vision specialist at Bayfields opticians on 6th of July.

This is from a referral from my local sight aid charity.

Will be going to look at sunglasses and lots of magnifiers to see what suits me best. We will see. Or not see, as the point in going here is just that 🤭

Will update you all to explain what goes on here for anyone else waiting to go and is not sure what happens there.

First time I will have been anyway. So we can learn together.

Referral to Low Vision Clinic

When I was on my Sight Loss Course, there were lots of magnifiers for us to look at.

From credit card sized ones. To bigger ones with more functions.

I learnt that the local sight aid charity (that I was with) that runs these sight courses and get togethers, can refer you to the low vision clinic for an assessment.

They can give you things such as magnifiers and canes to help you manage getting around and being able to cope with life being partially sighted a little bit easier.

Obviously I will be assessed to see what would help.

The lady that ran the course I’ve just been on is kindly referring me and is getting me some bump dots, so I can stop quessing what number the oven should be on. Stop washing my hair in conditioner, body wash, foot cream… Yep… Foot cream.

I can stick them little bumpy dot stickers on anything I need to.

On my make up,
When you’re putting red or purple lip liner on your eyes instead of popping eyeliner on. It’s annoying, then funny because your eyes look immediately sore due to the colour. Hard to get off though.

On my foundation bottles, I’ve put coloured nail varnish on the lid to show me which colour to use. I have 2. One for when I have false tan on, so it’s darker. I can pop some on there, so I know the difference.

So this doesn’t happen, and it has.
